Introduction
The Irish Banking Federation, in association with PWC, supported by the Summit Finuas Network, are hosting a half-day seminar on Islamic Finance on Thursday 10th June 2010 in the Clarion Hotel, IFSC, Dublin 1.
This is a half-day seminar exploring opportunities in wholesale Islamic financial services.
Islamic (or Shari’a compliant) financial services are an important emerging part of the global financial services landscape, estimated to be worth $822bn in 2009 and growing at 28% annually. Muslims account for 20% of the world’s population, yet Shari’a compliant assets represent only approximately 1% of global financial assets. This, coupled with the growth and emergence of developing economies in the Muslim world highlights the strong potential for Islamic finance.
Ireland is positioning itself to participate in this growing market. The Finance Bill 2010 includes provisions to ensure equivalence of treatment for Shari’a compliant financial products and their conventional counterparts. Given the strong international linkages from the financial services industry in Ireland, Ireland is well placed to become a location for Shari’a compliant business.
The programme for the seminar will outline the size and importance of the Islamic financial services market, as well as explain the typical structures used to ensure compliance with Shari’a law. The reasoning for the introduction of the provisions in the Finance Bill will be explained, and an in-depth examination of those proposals given. Furthermore, the regulatory treatment for Islamic finance will be explained and the developments of the Islamic Funds Industry will be explored. Finally, a view will be given on defaults in Islamic Finance, a current topic of interest.
