Programme Introduction

The Professional Certificate in International Corporate Banking aims to provide participants with a critical understanding of the Corporate Banking market and the professional competencies to develop and manage profitable corporate customer relationships.

In an uncertain economic climate, retaining customers and building relationships is critical to ongoing profitability. This is particularly relevant in the Corporate Banking market, where relationships with good customers afford opportunities to provide a wide range of products across an extended time frame as businesses grow and expand.

It is also vital that Corporate Bankers possess sound credit assessment abilities as well as a thorough understanding of the products and services available to corporate customers. These skills will enable the Corporate Banker to create financial solutions to meet the requirements of their corporate customers.

Programme Objectives

On successful completion of this programme candidates will be able to:

  • Analyse a facility proposal including assessment of security offered, borrower evaluation and sensitivity analysis of financial accounts submitted by the borrower;
  • Structure a credit facility and covenants to provide the appropriate level of return for a given level of risk;
  • Build and effectively manage existing corporate relationships and foster new business development;
  • Manage out existing relationships;
  • Decline proposals without jeopardising future opportunities;
  • Describe the appropriate financing and related products and services for different types of proposal including:
    >> Project/structured finance
    >> Acquisition finance
    >> Property finance
    >> Asset finance
    >> FX and interest rate products
    >> Global transmission services - Cash management, trade services, etc.
    >> Debt financing vehicles (including securitisation, CDOs, etc.)

Who should undertake the Professional Certificate in International Corporate Banking?

This qualification is aimed at those working in corporate and international banking who want to deepen their skills or those aspiring to such roles.

Programme Structure

Participants will attend a series of lectures for each module. Lectures will be interactive sessions at which candidates will develop their understanding of the assigned pre-reading material through discussions, exercises and case studies. The lectures will be led by Tom O’Connor, Corporate Banking Manager at Ulster Bank Corporate Markets, and supported by subject matter experts and/or guest speakers with significant experience in International Financial Services.

Lectures will take place in the in the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC), Dublin.

Programme Leader - Tom O’Connor

Tom O’Connor MBA, MII Grad., FLIA is an experienced professional with over 20 years experience in Retail and Corporate Banking. Currently he works for Ulster Bank Corporate Banking and manages the MNC and Professional Services Team. Tom is an experienced lecturer in such areas as Regulation, Fund Accounting and Lending. He is a
member of MBA Association of Ireland, currently serving on its Education committee and is also involved with the Open University of Ireland Alumni Association.
