   PROGRAMME CONTENT
  “Performance Analysis & Risk Management for the Hedge Fund Investor” is a three day course. The course will focus on practical problems such as assessment of fund / manager performance, optimal allocation of hedge funds to traditional portfolios, segregation of alpha- from alternative beta-generating funds, the construction of hedge fund of funds retail investment products, the
  creation of synthetic hedge fund portfolios, the design of hedge fund structured investment products and new developments in hedge fund market risk analysis. A distinctive feature of the programme is the access participants will have to proprietary hedge fund databases (CSFB/Tremont, S&P, HFR) and hedge fund portfolio optimization software available in the campus Trading Floor.

  WHO SHOULD ATTEND
  This short course will appeal to front- and middle-office staff in quantitative investment analysis, hedge fund trading, marketing and/or market risk analysis roles, who want to advance their knowledge of alternative asset classes, trading strategies, hedge fund performance measurement and risk analysis.   WHO SHOULD ATTEND

  This course is designed for industry professionals who are seeking to enhance or expand their knowledge of the credit asset class. Participants should have a numerical ability and an interest in expanding their knowledge set to include trading and risk management skills in credit derivatives. This course will appeal to traders, risk managers, regulators, compliance and middle office staff.

  COURSE CONTENT

  Credit Products as an Asset Class is a three day course.  The course examines the recent history of credit derivatives and explores their role in the credit crisis. We look at the existing credit market and place particular attention on Credit Default Swaps (CDSs). These credit derivatives remain a highly liquid asset that continue to grow in popularity and trading volumes. We note the recent interest of mainstream media in the Irish sovereign CDS spread. We examine how CDS contracts can be used to speculate and hedge credit risk. We look at trading opportunities, structured product ideas and risk management strategies surrounding this product. Throughout the course, we will use contemporary industry publications and a live trading floor to absorb the theory and implement some practical trading strategies. We will discuss and analyse the strategies and in doing so, reinforce the theoretical component of the course.

  THE TRADING FLOOR
  A Trading Floor is located prominently in the KBS building and is the only such custom designed, campus based, facility in Ireland (www.ul.ie/tradingfloor). The facility is equipped with the latest hardware and communication infrastructure and a sophisticated suite of proprietary trading and investment software licensed from organisations such as Thomson Reuters (3000 Xtra) and  MathWorks (Matlab Financial Toolboxes). Users of the facilities have the same access to real-time market prices and investment analytics as a proprietary trader, risk analyst or portfolio manager. The trading floor provides state of the art facilities that are unlikely to be replicated in the foreseeable future. The KBS established the facility as a direct response to the need for higher level skills within the Irish financial services industry.  The trading floor is ideally suited as a mechanism for the delivery of innovative and rigorous higher level training courses.

  APPLIED TRADING AND RISK MANAGEMENT WORKSHOPS
  Analysis of the future skills needs of the International Financial Services  industry in Ireland has  highlighted the need for specialist quantitative expertise in the modeling, measurement and management of financial risk. It is increasingly clear that this need will become more pronounced in the  changing financial and regulatory environment.

  The workshops are designed to balance theoretically rigorous content with a practical emphasis on the acquisition of quantitative skills and, in particular, an intuitive understanding of the dynamics of risk in financial markets. Each workshop will be delivered against the backdrop of a simulated ‘live’ trading floor environment, providing access to the same ‘real-time’ market information and risk-management analytics as a professional portfolio manager, front-office trader or middle-office risk analyst. This form of experiential learning provides participants with a significant advantage as they will develop a comprehensive understanding of the practicalities of financial market trading, risk-management and quantitative investment management.

  LEARNING APPROACH
  Faculty in the Kemmy Business School have pioneered a “learning by doing” approach to the study of financial markets. This teaching approach is designed to carefully blend the academic knowledge and the technical skills required for high value-added positions in the financial services industry in Ireland. In addition, the University of Limerick is an outstanding centre for research and scholarship so course participants can expect to be taught by some of the leading scholars in their field.
  The combination of the extensive trading floor facilities and the faculty’s unique teaching philosophy will enable course participants to gain realistic ‘hands-on’ experience in the management of investment portfolios, in the implementation of proprietary trading strategies and, of increasing importance , in the assessment of financial risk and its systemic characteristics.
